This is WikiProject Dacia, an area for focused collaboration among users on the topic of Dacia.
|
A group of Wikimedians have formed this Commons:WikiProject to better organize, categorize and improve the quality of media and galleries related to ancient Dacia and primarily to the history of Dacians, Getae and Moesi.
This project and its subpages contain the suggestions of the participating Wikipedians and it is hoped that this project will help to focus the efforts of others. If you would like to help, please inquire on the talk page and review the Tasks below.
Scope
The scope of the project includes the following elements:
- The time span: 1500 BC - 600 AD, with the core focus on the Classical times. This doesn't imply any support for Daco-Romanian continuity nor it denies it. It also doesn't imply that Dacians, Getae or Moesi appeared exactly in 1500 BC or disappeared in 600 AD. It simply provides a common sense time frame within which most known and reliable academic references to the mentioned people and space were made. References outside this time frame are scarce to non-existent.
- The space: The sum of Dacia (at Burebista's time) plus Moesia and Scythia Minor (after Roman conquest) where Dacians, Getae and Moesi where known to live, without implying a continuum or uniformity or that they are necessarily identical people. While closely related, Thrace is considered relatively distinct, at least linguistically. The related media about Thrace, especially around the common culture, religion, warfare, are usually treated with lower importance but not zero importance, and without implying that Dacians are Thracians or the other way around.
- The people: As Dacia was named after Daci, the Dacians are at the core focus, but others who lived in the same space, in various periods within the time span in scope, including Celts, Romans, Greeks, Germanic people, Sarmatians, Scythians, Illyrians, Thracians and others not mentioned here, are by no means excluded. Media and galleries related to their contribution and interaction with Dacians, Getae and Moesi are very welcomed and encouraged.
- The culture: The core focus is the Paleo-Balkan culture, where religion, language, warfare, art had more or less enough commonality across the ancients in the space and time span defined in the scope. The other different cultures that existed or later migrated in the space are not excluded or their importance is not minimized in any way, but are not the core focus. There also are other specialized projects that focus on those cultures.
- The name: The name choice for the project doesn't imply that all the space or territory defined in the scope was only or entirely Dacian. It was chosen for simplicity and since it has more resonance than other possible choices.
Your input on greater clarification on the scope is greatly appreciated, if you wish to comment make a new section on our Talk page

We at WikiProject on Dacia work together to reach the following goals:
- Make the little known but important Dacian history available to the world
- Increase the exposure and quality of Dacia related media and galleries
- Improve every file, category or gallery in the Category:WikiProject Dacia cleanup

Please help with our current collaboration on this subject: Map of Dacian settlements
The idea is to create an up to date comprehensive map of Dacian settlements and fortresses, ideally in SVG format. Here are some starting points:
-
Only davae, no irregular town names, no archaeological sites
-
Some known towns, some archaeological sites
-
-
-
- Categories: Maps of the history of the Balkans, Maps of Dacia, Dacian settlements, Dacian fortresses
WP Articles: Dacian towns, List of Dacian towns and fortresses (under works, map will be complementary to this article)
WP Categories: Dacian towns
WP Articles: Listă de cetăți dacice
WP Categories: Cetăți dacice
- Dacian fortresses, settlements and Roman castra from Romania: Google Maps • Google Earth
- Maps from Wanner, Robert (2010) - Forts, fields and towns - Communities in Northwest Transylvania from the first century BC to the fifth century AD
- Maps from Oltean, Ioana Adina (2007) - Dacia: landscape, colonisation and romanisation
- Linguistic maps based on Sorin Olteanu's work
Our favorites
Feel free to add your own favorite media, with a short caption
- When uploading archaeological objects and art, we highly recommend the use of {{Artwork}} (instead of {{Information}}) since it provides specialized fields where very important detail can be provided (discovery date, current location etc.)
- We suggest longer, descriptive names for files, as in Map with Trajans Bridge and Roman Ruins in Danubius Pannonico-Mysicus 1726 by Marsigli.jpg, instead of names like Map01.jpg
- Use Sum-it-up to automatically provide multilingual descriptions and interwiki links to categories and galleries (e.g. Category:Dacia) and What is that? for adding multilingual descriptions to files (e.g. File:Roman province of Dacia (106 - 271 AD).svg). You can also add both tools to your Toolbox on the left menu from your Preferences, Gadgets tab. This greatly enhances the ability of other users to find and use the files across all Wikis.
- Make sure you provide reliable sources for the maps you create, and provide the author, book, page in the "Source" field.. Example:

- Try to use the SVG file format for maps, since it is much easier to edit the labels
- If you derive your work from other images on Commons, please create a relationship between the two images using the {{Derived from}}, {{Retouched picture}} and {{Derivative versions}} templates. Example:
Below is a list of galleries not ready for prime time, which are kept in the project space. You can help to expand and bring them to the main space. To avoid speedy deletion of new/incomplete galleries, it is advised to create them first as subpages of Drafts or in your user space.
