Dirac is a free video codec that can be uploaded in ogg containers. In future it may be of use to commons since it should offer better quality than Theora. However VP9 quite likely will be the better option. Dirac does offer the ability to store video losslessy.

Commons support[edit]

Uploading is supported if it is in ogg container format. However, MediaWiki does not correctly recognize the file, and thinks its an audio file. See file:Minnehaha Falls on June 22, 2013 - Video 1 of 4.ogv for an example file encoded in Dirac.

Transcoders[edit]

Multi-platform[edit]

  • ffmpeg2dirac can encode dirac videos in the ogg container format (ffmpeg just by itself seems to only be able to do a native dirac container). There are binaries available for windows at http://diracvideo.org/download/ffmpeg2dirac/. There's also source code to compile on other platforms. User:Bawolff's experiance was that getting ffmpeg2dirac to compile took several hours of fiddling.

Windows[edit]

There doesn't appear to be a simple way to transcode to Dirac in windows. MediaCoder appears to be broken and asks to install spy wear if you try to use the Google download mirror version. OggConvert requires various Python libiaries to be installed to run and hasn't been confirmed to work yet.

Linux[edit]

In theory MediaCoder, LiVES and OggConvert should all be able to do it. Untested as yet.

Mac[edit]

Players[edit]

VLC is able to play Dirac.
