Commons:File upload service
From Wikimedia Commons, the free media repository
|
The File Upload Service is a free service provided by Wikimedians who know their way around the system and who can easily receive and upload a large number of files (see the list of helpers below), add licensing information, and categorise the uploaded media.
To use the service, you need to do the following:
- Put all the photos you want to upload in a directory.
- Create a text file, for example, by running a program like NotePad or Word. The file should be called "files.txt" or "files.doc".
- In that text file or document, list the filenames along with a description for each file, like this:
>DutchParliament.jpg Robert G. Example in front of the Dutch parliament. >Cauliflower.jpg A fresh cauliflower.
Make sure every line containing a filename starts with a ">" character.
Now you can use an archiving program like 7-Zip to create an archive of all the files in the directory, and send them to one of the people below. Now, here comes the important bit:
BY SUBMITTING FILES THROUGH THE FILE UPLOAD SERVICE, YOU AGREE TO LICENSE THEM UNDER THE GNU FREE DOCUMENTATION LICENSE (SEE Project:Copyrights FOR DETAILS). You can choose the option of another free content license by either noting this, for all files, in your email to the Wikimedia helper, or by putting image copyright tags in the file descriptions.
If you wish to upload free content created by others through this service, the source and license information must be mentioned for each file, e.g.:
>Cauliflower.jpg
Source: US Agricultural Research Service
PD
You can also add other information, like categories, to the text file, but you don't have to.
Note that you will receive full credit (either as creator or as locator) for files uploaded through this service unless you explicitly ask not to be mentioned.

- I accept files by email, but please send an email enquiry first and wait for an answer before sending the whole lot of them. Email link is on my user page. - MacGyverMagic 11:55, 13 July 2005 (UTC)

At the moment I am realy busy and I got many mindless Emails in the past (e.g. Email with a link to a picture at cnn.com with the requesting to upload this picture). Therefor I can and will only upload your pictures if you have done the preparatory work. The system above is not really helpful for me and if I should upload your pictures then you have to use my following system.
[edit] The procedure
- Think about which licence you will use.
- Here you find some information
- image copyright tags
- Image_use_policy
- Village_pump If you are uncertain please use the discussion pages and do not ask me, because I am not an expert and I will upload only clear labeled photos.
- Here you find some information
- Use the search function to perhaps find a already existing category. These makes it easier to find your photos later.
- Put all the photos you want to upload in a directory.
- Use clear names for the files without special characters and spaces
(e.g. Icehotel-se-34.JPG)
- Create a text file, for example, by running a program like NotePad
or Kate, Kedit etc. The file should be called "files.txt".
- In that text file, list the filenames along with a description for
each file, like this:
English The Ice Hotel
:Author: Stephan Herz (User:Stephan_Herz)
:Date: 2005-12-29
:Notes:The Ice Hotel near the village of Jukkasjärvi, Kiruna, Sweden
Deutsch Eishotel
:Autor: Stephan Herz (User:Stephan_Herz)
:Datum: 2005-12-29
:Beschreibung: Eishotel in Jukkasjärvi, Kiruna,Schweden
PD-self
--> falls vorhanden
- Use this template for each photo.

If your image archive is too big to be sent by email (due to the usual provider restrictions), you can upload it to my FTP-Server. Uploading a file via FTP is as easy as sending an email, you won't even have to put the files into an archive. You will be given instructions after →contacting me
[edit] Lcarsdata (English)
I can recive e-mail and are able to provide webspace for upload if required. For more information please see my userpage.
