Graphic Lab School/Images to improve

The Graphics Lab School is to initiate graphists who haven't local Graphic lab to collaborative image improvement. Like all the Graphic Labs, it helps improve all graphical content used by Wikimedia projects stored on the Wikimedia Commons.

If you are Japanese, Polish, Italian, Russian, Chinese, Portuguese and want to learn how to use Inkscape and help to improve the graphism on Wikimedia : This page is for You.

The Wikigraphists work to improve the quality and clarity of images that are proposed to them by the community. This work most often involves extracting key elements from photos, removing distracting elements, and improving the general appearance of images. Creation of drawings, diagrams and maps is also within the scope of this project if the requests are clear and the work is feasible (less than one hour).

Ok, I've updated the SVG file with some more coasts and the xmlns tag. The file renders fine on Commons now and seem to work as a 250px thumb as well, so thanks for the tip. I'll be working with Scandinavia now. So if you don't hear from me during a few days, don't think I'm dead, I'm probably just having nightmares about Norway.

[edit] Worm anatomy

Article(s): Earthworm

Request: Conversion to SVG could make this into a highly effective, crisp diagram. Some help might be necessary from a knowledgeable Wikipedian (such as User:TheAlphaWolf, User:Quercusrobur and User:WormRunner) Circeus 18:52, 8 February 2007 (UTC)

Graphist opinion:

This looks like a straight-forward but fun project. If nobody has started it by this weekend I'll probably take a stab at it. Are there colouration preferences for the various parts of the anatomy? ChaosNil 23:58, 9 February 2007 (UTC)
Eh nevermind, maybe somebody else will do it. ChaosNil 18:20, 14 February 2007 (UTC)

[edit] COA of Kiribati

Stale. MarmBot 20:41, 12 May 2008 (UTC)

Article(s): Kiribati and all related articles.

I redrew the png as an svg.
I don't think mine is too great. Anyone care to help improve it? Thank you.--Indolences 16:16, 28 February 2007 (UTC)
According to that license, a GIF version of the vector graphic from that website is allowed on Wikipedia. I think creating an SVG version violates the copyright. Maybe somebody else can look into this as well.↔NMajdantalk 17:57, 28 February 2007 (UTC)
Can a Coat of Arms of a country be copyrighted? It can always be said that it was based off of any of these images, as it would be true. -Indolences 18:13, 28 February 2007 (UTC)
Yes and no. The idea or blazon behind the image cannot be copyrighted but a particular artist's version of the insignia can be. Wikipedia practice seems to be that as long as it is not a direct duplicate of a copyrighted version, we'll be fine. Valentinian T / C 23:35, 28 February 2007 (UTC)
Okay so I should make it look more like this? As it is on the government website I would think it would not be "copyrighted". -Indolences 05:45, 2 March 2007 (UTC)
This looks like a good version to base a new image on. From a heraldic perspective, I'd say that the idea about claiming copyright for an official coat of arms image or flag is meaningless, since these images are owned and used by nations. The U.S. flag was designed by somebody, but nobody considers this image off-limits to Wikipedia, no matter that the first person to add the 50th star can't have been dead for 70 years. Unfortunately, U.S. laws weren't designed to take this situation into account. The legal situation behind such images is very tricky and I'd be surprised if traditional encyclopedias didn't simply use such images without consulting others first. But if you create your own image inspired by another image, there'll be no problems at all. If anybody is game for it, a new .svg version of the coat of arms of Denmark would also be very welcome. I'm not the biggest fan of the current .svg version and a better one would be much appreciated. Valentinian T / C 12:27, 13 March 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Transparent compass card

Stale. MarmBot 20:41, 12 May 2008 (UTC)

Request: I made Image:Compass Card.png transparent to use it as an overlay on maps, but doing it to the whole image kills readability depending on the background colour. Is there something that could be done to the image, maybe apply transparency to some areas only, or surround dark colours with white or something? Para 20:15, 18 May 2007 (UTC)

Graphist opinion:

A good solution may be to use a white disk in background, and to merge your compass on this white background disk. Yug (talk) 23:36, 18 May 2007 (UTC)
But if I put a white disk in the background, even a transparent one, then the it will be less transparent generally. Anyway, thanks for the idea! I did something else instead: I copied the whole image on another layer, deleted everything but the text and their backgrounds, and made them just a bit transparent. I think they're pretty readable now and can't think of any more that could be done to make it better. It actually looks horrible here on the wiki, but if you try it with Google Earth using the kml at Commons:Geocoding#Parameters, it's much better. Too bad I can't include a screenshot. --Para 16:46, 19 May 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Mercedes-Benz 220 -- Needs colour/etc adjustment

Article(s): w:en:Mercedes-Benz W114, w:nl:Europese auto in 1967, w:es:Mercedes-Benz Clase E

Request: The colour balance in this image is all wrong. This was scanned from a photo I took forever ago, and the photo has gotten damaged since then. I had some success by adding a translucent green-colourised layer over the top of it (it balanced out the excessive red), but I couldn't get the contrast right after that, so I left it as it is (but I uploaded a really high-res version of it, in case anyone takes up this offer). Don't worry about touching up the smaller scratches on the photo; that's tedious clone-brush work which I'm willing to do myself. So! I'd be grateful if anyone could do the colour/contrast/etc adjustment for me. Thanks a whole lot. :) Lewis Collard! (natter) 18:28, 23 July 2007 (UTC)

Graphist opinion: I tried to fix it up, hopefully it's a bit better now... unfortunately I couldn't fix entirely the section in the middle that was quite different from the rest, and of course the right half which is out of focus a bit was not fixable, but I sharpened it up a tad and tried my best to make that hedge all the same colour ;) Someone else might be able to do a better job, but perhaps this gives you something to work with now. -- Editor at Largetalk 13:20, 31 July 2007 (UTC)

I darkened the pavement on the bottom a little and reduced the level of red to make the color seem more realistic. I tried fixing some of the worst blurry spots (the headlamp on the left) but they seem to be beyond repair. Mr.Z-man 02:30, 13 November 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Music map of the United States

Stale. MarmBot 20:41, 12 May 2008 (UTC)
 • A long time ago, I created a map (see it at Image:USmusicmap.png), a rudimentary attempt at creating something greater, primarily for en:Music of the United States. I think someone who actually had some experience with image-manipulation, even if not map-making specifically, could make a great map. I could provide all the information necessary to make something very detailed (which I know would be less useful for a Wikipedia article, since you'd have to zoom in to see anything, but would still be interesting to look at, and could even make for a dorm room poster) with symbols showing everything from cities with notable blues scenes to the home of acclaimed symphony orchestras. If possible, maps showing a subset of this information could be used for articles like en:Latin music in the United States. Is anybody willing to do the image work if I do the research work? [edit] Problem with appearance of image in any web page

I uploaded Media:Wheeler_experiment_problems.svg and thought I must have uploaded the wrong one because there is an intrusive inclusion of one of the graphic elements. There should be four things that look a little like

\\\\ or ////

A fifth one shows up when the image appears on a page. Downloading that image I get a png with the intrusive element in it. So I assume that there is an on-the-fly method of turning svg images into png images for display on web pages.

The extra image is very intrusive and reduces the explanatory value of the diagram.

That problem disappeared after I reuploaded a vanilla svg version, but the text at the top is still spilling over its intended bounds. The size of the font must be going wrong.Patrick Edwin Moran 23:57, 7 December 2007 (UTC)

Strangely, it shows up correctly when coded as "media" above, but see the part at the end of the top green line. Any way to fix this? Patrick Edwin Moran 05:51, 1 December 2007 (UTC)

The problem seems to be with the freeware available, Inkscape. There are two versions of SVG, one is Inkscape-specific, and one is vanilla SVG. Using vanilla works better. Patrick Edwin Moran 17:02, 6 December 2007 (UTC)

People are asked to use the SVG format rather than GIF or other low bandwidth applications, but the available information on how to use the freeware program Inkscape is poor. The "book" about Inkscape on Wikipedia is a bad joke. The help file for Inkscape doesn't give responsive help. It happens that I have SVG software available from my university, but that route is not available to the majority of people. I think it is unrealistic/impolite to give people wolf tickets for uploading files in other formats that somebody thinks could be supplied in SVG format unless there are adequate means to supply those files. Patrick Edwin Moran 23:53, 7 December 2007 (UTC)

Hi sorry for the lack of replys. As you found out saving the file as "plain svg" tends to work better then "inkscape svg". There is currently an ongoing discussion about writing a SVG help page (should be on Help:SVG at some point in the future) but that project has just got of the ground. The Text problem is probably due to issues between how the wikimedia software interprets the font (compared to how every other program interprets it) this is a quite common bug and can sometimes be fixed but switching to one of the supported fonts (info on help:SVG). I'll take a look at the file and see if I can fix the last problem. /Lokal_Profil 00:44, 8 December 2007 (UTC)
Text no longer crosses the image elements but it might be a tad small instead. /Lokal_Profil 00:49, 8 December 2007 (UTC)

In the 1 December version text was too small, there were whitespace around the image making its use on articles problematic. Şemdinli was incorrectly labeled as 'Semdinli' (mind the Ş/S difference). Similar problems exist on other such maps which are poorly categorized (yet another problem). -- Cat ちぃ? 22:16, 16 December 2007 (UTC)

Graphist opinions:

Umh... sorry, we can do lot, but not that lot. It will probably need that someone interesting in mapping and Turkey come, and then that will be done. The work seems too lot to be done here, by volunteers, not especially interested by Turkey. Yug Yug (talk) 12:14, 17 December 2007 (UTC)

Request: I'd like the picture to be horizontal. -- Simon Shek 10:01, 17 December 2007 (UTC)

Graphist opinion:

I'm guessing you meant you wanted the image straightened horizontally. James.mcd.nz 17:25, 18 December 2007 (UTC)
New version looks good. Unless the original uploader minds you should probably upload the new image over the old one. Also the licensing of the new one is wrong but I assume thats due to copy pasting =). /Lokal_Profil 02:00, 19 December 2007 (UTC)

Request: Removal of the Wikimedia Foundation logo. it's presence there may have legal issues as it is making the image unnecessarily unfree. Esthetically it doesn't look too appealing either (no offense to the creator). -- Cat ちぃ? 23:14, 21 December 2007 (UTC)

Perhaps the ticket image could be in WMF colors instead? Borders could be blue, background green and text red? -- Cat ちぃ? 23:15, 21 December 2007 (UTC)
Geni was kind enough to remove the logo. But my color idea stands. :) -- Cat ちぃ? 23:41, 21 December 2007 (UTC)
MM... yes thanks again Geni! :) -- Cat ちぃ? 23:50, 21 December 2007 (UTC)

Opinion:

Removing the logo makes the image look better. But I'm not sure abot the new colours. I'd say they make the text less legible. /Lokal_Profil 12:19, 22 December 2007 (UTC)
You hardly can make a legible logo with that versions of green, blue and red. Please consider white as if it was also a WMF colour, so it can be used for letters or background contrasting with the other colours. --Javier ME 11:44, 29 December 2007 (UTC)
Is there anything wrong with the current colours (i.e. red, orange, black)? I don't think many people will make the connection between Wikimedia colours and Wikimedia so the question then becomes: why fix something which works? /Lokal_Profil 23:10, 29 December 2007 (UTC)
Also, if you're red/green colour blind, the new version will fuck your shit up. Lewis Collard! (talk, contribs, en.wp)
It was a nice thought, but I think the old color scheme made the text stand out better anyway...Vladsinger 23:29, 25 January 2008 (UTC)
Using white text in the new version, as stated by Javierme, would be better. Also, users have their monitors calibrated differently, and the dark green background, with the black text will make it especially difficult to see on some monitors, colour blind or not. :). In my opinion white text would be a big improvement. Even on the best calibrated monitor black text on dark background should be a big no-no. GeeAlice 00:00, 29 January 2008 (UTC)

Both these projects are looking for new logos. I know artists haunt this page, so please please send us new submissions! – Mike.lifeguard | @en.wb 22:00, 12 January 2008 (UTC)

Post the current logos maybe -- like a point of reference or two. -- carol 10:59, 13 January 2008 (UTC)

There is no Wikijunior logo currently; the Wikibooks logo is show at the right. We want something new; see the meta pages for guidelines (and a few hard rules). – Mike.lifeguard | @en.wb 20:40, 27 January 2008 (UTC)

Request: I would like to have the background whitened (but all inscriptions kept). Thanks -- B.navez 19:45, 14 January 2008 (UTC)

Graphist opinion:

Wouldn't it be better to move the text (not including the lables) to the image description. That would make the file more usefull in different languages. Actually maybe even the lables should go unless we have text (in the image description) that explains what they are, and even then new lables would probably be clearer. /Lokal_Profil 19:53, 14 January 2008 (UTC)
No, thanks. Original drawing has to be entirely kept, no matter if labels are not really used.--B.navez 20:05, 14 January 2008 (UTC)
OK, I've uploaded a clean (no lables) version for uses elsewhere. To keep any inscription would require a much more refined tool so I don't think I can do that. /Lokal_Profil 20:20, 14 January 2008 (UTC)
Fine, however it's better and useful. If someone is able to make a further version also with the labels, it could givee a good reproduction of the original figure. There is no urge.--B.navez 20:28, 14 January 2008 (UTC)
I worked on this. The labels in my version are all eh, 'good enough' with the exception of the page number(?) in the upper right corner. I considered searching for a similar font right before I stopped working on it. Would a version without that one text chunk suffice? -- carol 15:30, 17 January 2008 (UTC)
I took a stab and added the labels with the closest font I could find. The text is kinda crisp, but it's labeled. I also made a png version, that was much more clear, but the file was huge to keep the same ratio, so I reduced it by half, but the labels are more blurry than the JPG version when viewed at a smaller size. GeeAlice 02:54, 29 January 2008 (UTC)
You might try indexing the image at the original size. I think it is safe to reduce these scans of paintings from millions of colors to 256 colors because of the simplicity of the coloring. I am not certain that will change the softness of the fonts when thumbnailed, but it might! -- carol 14:25, 4 February 2008 (UTC)

Pasted from my talkpage - Perhaps someone here can help? Thanks! -- Deadstar (msg) 08:46, 25 January 2008 (UTC)

By the way, do you have an idea why we cannot visualise this file at 50px in wiki but it is ok at 25px??? is it corrupted or something? thank you again, --SanchoPanzaXXI 21:51, 24 January 2008 (UTC)
Something is very wrong with this image: I tried to open the svg in Firefox, and it almost "froze up" my computer, until I closed FF after a couple of minutes (!). During this time FF used 700MB+ of memory, dropping to 200MB every couple of seconds (while ~83MB is normal). I have never seen anything like this... P.S.: A screendump of what happened is here. - Erik Baas 23:30, 25 January 2008 (UTC)
made a new version which works, if you think it's ok i'll replace the old one with it. It's slightly different, so let me know if you want it changed. original new version

hm.. just discovered that the text in the original renders completely different in different sizes.. will look into this /Marmelad 22:26, 27 January 2008 (UTC)

Well, If the solution is just to create a new file, well, let's do it in that way but I think this is not a real solution...this is not the only svg file I detected with this problem to show image "above" a undetermined number of px; it would be useful to detect what this things happens. Besides that, your version has some errors but no problem, I will amend it, thano you for your support,--SanchoPanzaXXI 09:24, 28 January 2008 (UTC)
one thing i noticed is that text on path can be problematic when the image is resized. i recommend converting the text to a path before uploading (but perhaps retaining a copy of the original text outside the viewbox for edits) /Marmelad 10:31, 28 January 2008 (UTC)
it seems the problem is with paths linking other paths (rsvg gives floating point errors, but there may be other problems). /Marmelad 11:43, 28 January 2008 (UTC)

Request: -- Sameboat - 同舟 00:58, 28 January 2008 (UTC)

Graphist opinion: the later image is very wide, and gets shrunk when rendered as a png by mediawiki. this can degrade the quality of e.g. text elements. /Marmelad 08:49, 28 January 2008 (UTC)

I have decreased the scale between stations so it's now 1100px wide (originally 1400px), but still looks distorted. Perhaps the optimal width is below 800px I guess... -- Sameboat - 同舟 12:02, 28 January 2008 (UTC)
Correct, after numerous test, the best width is 1023px or below. Is it the same to other users? -- Sameboat - 同舟 12:16, 28 January 2008 (UTC)

[edit] SVG will not display

Request: This image will not display in the medium view, though it will display inside article and full. Any help? -- Knulclunk 02:48, 30 January 2008 (UTC)

Graphist opinion: open your file with an editor like notepad++ (on windows) and look at his end: you will see a string like: <i:pgf id="adobe_illustrator_pgf"> <![CDATA[ eJzsvXuTHMeRJ/g/zfgd6v4YM2lv1chHZGak7mzNqh/Qco0SZSS1q72xNVoTaJLY6Qe3AYyW9+nP etc. this is an embeded raster file!
