Beginning in July 2011, NARA is contributing thousands of images to Commons; please see Commons:National Archives and Records Administration. This page may be used by Wikimedians to report errors encountered in National Archives and Records Administration catalog records so that staff may make corrections. The most common error is an image file which has been assigned to the wrong catalog record. Thank you for your help.

  • It looks like the image was switched with another; images #172 and #173 on the African Americans in WWII image list. The correct description should be "As a landing barge noses onto the beach, members of the Negro Seabee Battalion clamber ashore. This assault training is supplemental to the Seabees' chief work as construction crews for the U.S. Navy." Ca. December 1942. The identifier should be 208-N-570, but I can't find the corresponding record in ARC, so I don't know if the correct high-res TIFF is available to upload. Contradictory information between "Koch, K., Photographer" and the "NARA record" link. The Author of "Sociale verdediging", 1982, World War I historian Pr. Koen Koch of Leiden University, was born in 1945 according to this website. So he cannot have taken photographs in 1919. On E-Bay the same picture is sold with a different marking "Karl Koch Kiel" instead of "M L Carstens Hamburg". See also This other one with "Karl Koch Kiel", and this other one.

While I can't confirm that these are not Mandan doing a buffalo dance, this is certainly not by Bodmer in the 1830s unless we have time travelling photographers bringing their own electric light fixtures. Bodmer did do a couple paintings of Mandan buffalo dances but this photograph is unrelated.   • This is interesting; the ARC record actually has two images, the correct San Francisco one and the Great Wall image, and it looks like the bot picked up the latter one. The Great Wall image is actually the one (correctly) associated with ARC 531019; it looks like that image was accidentally also attached to the ARC record one number higher. If that could just be removed from the ARC 531020 record, the bot could probably be re-run to pick up the correct image (though it'd be good to keep *this* image as well, but just with the correct metadata/description).     • Okay, I uploaded File:Troop L, 6th U.S. Cavalry, at the Great Wall of China, near the Ming Tombs. East of Nan-Kow Pass. - NARA - 531019.tif with this image, which appears to be the correct association. So, the San Francisco image can be corrected at any time, if possible (and maybe should be deleted if it is not possible). Part of the original problem may be that the Great Wall image has a Signal Corps number of 75130 printed on it, but instead in what looks to be a mistake got the local identifier of 111-SC-95130 , whereas the San Francisco image actually does have the 95130 number printed on it, and ended up with a 111-SC-95130A local identifier. How are these images public domain? Were they not marked as copyrighted when created/published? Unless the artists were government employees (as opposed to contractors), this is the only plausible route I can see to them being PD. These are modern artworks by unknown artists, and presumably NARA has no rights to them. Even the donor would not have had the rights, unless they explicitly purchased the copyrights as well as the physical artworks (sale of an original artwork does not equate to sale of a copyright). There is a copyright notice (albeit blurry) on the lower left of these posters. The author is not likely "unknown"; they may be "not provided", but that does not excuse us for ignoring the obvious (that there is a possible copyright claim) and claim these as federal works. The Archival Description for "World War II Posters, compiled 1942 - 1945" (ARC Identifier 513498) states "Restricted - Possibly Copyright Some or all of this material may be restricted by copright or other intellectual property right restrictions" under Use Restriction.   • The author is The Sheldon-Claire Company. Apparently this series dates from 1942, or possibly later in World War II. I could not find any renewal registrations for these in the years 1969-1973 in the Artwork sections, so I think copyright was not renewed. The "Possibly Copyright" notice on the series means that some of the items in the series have restrictions; however individual items which do not have restrictions should be fine (note the "Unrestricted" determination on these posters -- they were not uploaded casually, but I think that field was checked).
