Many of my contributions have involved (and will involve) moving files from English Wikibooks, which has changed its settings to allow local uploads only for fair use files, to Commons. I don't always remember to rename poorly named files at Wikibooks before moving them here and am only about halfway done. See all the "this bot move has been checked" edit summaries in my contributions, which account for many of my 5800+ edits. I have read over Commons:File renaming as well. Thank you. I have transferred a lot of images from Malayalam wikipedia to commons most of which has names in Malaylam. I would like filemover rights so that I can rename them appropriately to English. Thank you. Sreejith K (talk) 03:04, 8 December 2010 (UTC)
Not done Our file renaming policy does not permit renames just to change language (we are a multilingual project). Anyone applying for filemover rights should at least be already familiar with file renaming policy. Instead please concentrate on making sure there are as many translations as possible in the information template of each of your uploads. Thanks for your contribution transferring images. --99of9 (talk) 02:17, 10 December 2010 (UTC)
Thanks for the update. But a lot of images in my regional langugage are spelt incorrectly and I would like to correct them. A few of them needs renaming to English so that other Indian language wikipedias can use them as well. I am well versed in Malayalam, Hindi and Tamil language and I believe there is a lot for me to do in commons in terms of correcting spelling mistakes of files in these languages. And yes, I have read and understood the rules completely.--Sreejith K (talk) 04:49, 10 December 2010 (UTC)
Why do you think that some of them need to be renamed to English before other Indian language wikipedias can use them? Why can't they use them already? --99of9 (talk) 05:42, 10 December 2010 (UTC)
That situation can be quite rare but I just popped it up here in anticipation. Generally most Indian people only understand one Indian language. So for easy identification, like images of people that are only known locally and images of waterfalls which often look similar, it can be convenient if the name is in English. I am not planning to change the entire Indian language files to English names, but as I said, although rare there could be situations when it is required. --Sreejith K (talk) 06:31, 10 December 2010 (UTC)
As I mentioned before, the rules do not permit that kind of name change, the language should remain once it is chosen by the uploader. It's not about convenience. The descriptions on the file page are the place to provide alternate translations (e.g. in English), and should fully describe the waterfall, so all users will be able to search and find the file they want. --99of9 (talk) 09:45, 11 December 2010 (UTC)
I am failing my make my point clear here. Hopefully this statement will help. I am requesting this right to correct the spelling mistakes of files in Indian languages and not really to rename them to English. --Sreejith K (talk) 15:58, 11 December 2010 (UTC)

Requesting Filemover rights, I am an admin on the English Wikipedia and a Reviewer on Commons, I have recently become more active on here and Wikisource, uploading a number of files (though using automated tools, so they don't show under my contributions) and I'm also in the process moving images from English Wikipedia. I'm working on a project of cleaning up files associated with w:Heinrich Cornelius Agrippa, and a lot of files are very poorly named (e.g. File:ANL001.gif is a set of 29 GIFs with similar names - in this case I've nominated them for deletion but if it fails, I would rename them). In addition, the benefit of hindsight has recently shown me that some of my uploads or moves from other projects should have been renamed before the move. Thank you. User:Doug(talk contribs) 19:40, 18 December 2010 (UTC)
✓ Done. You are a bit low on edits here. Because of your sysop at en:wp (and the heaps of edits there) I have assigned the rights to you. Also please make sure, that you have read rename carefully. Thanks for helping here. Amada44  talk to me 19:53, 18 December 2010 (UTC)

I am requesting filemover rights. I sometimes goof the naming when uploading files. Occasionally, I realize the name I've chosen isn't the most appropriate descriptor -- after learning more (e.g. my images labeled "digestion chambers" don't show 'em... but do show a chronic nerve injury). Also, I've seen numerous typos in my little niche (micrographs/human disease). Getting filemover rights would allow me to fix the above things quickly without having to bother someone else. I've been here (Wikicommons) since 2008 and I've been active on Wikipedia (with the same pseudonym) since 2005. Thank you. Nephron  T|C 05:10, 21 December 2010 (UTC)

Requesting filemover and autopatrol permissions. I am an admin on English Wikipedia, and am familiar with naming conventions and how bothersome ambiguous names like DSCNxxxx or IMG_xxxx can be. Poco a poco[edit]

Hello, I would like to request the filemover flag. I've been uploaded tons of files for a couple of years and some of them with names that are not very descriptive and it would be much easier and quicker for me (and for you) to move them on my own instead of marking them for deletion and uploading them again. Sometimes I also upload pictures (flowers, buildings,...) but I am not sure how to categorize them. After a while I learn more about them and could rename them no a more proper name. In addition, I sometimes find files from other users that I could improve. Thank you. Poco a poco (talk) 10:17, 9 January 2011 (UTC)

I think it's covered by Aim 6: harmonize file names of a set of images (so that only one part of all names differs) to ease their usage in templates (e.g. diagram symbols, scans of pages of a book, maps). --AleXXw talk!•me@de.wp 15:18, 26 January 2011 (UTC)

Beyond My Ken[edit]

Filemover: Requesting this strictly for convenience. I've uploaded a considerable number of images, and misname the files at the rate of about one per upload session, due to typos or photo data accidentally left in. My intention is to use the right to correct these errors, thus not requiring another editor to do it. I've uploaded hundreds of images on Wikipedia, and I've noticed that they have somehow migrated to this site. I have also begun transitioning my uploads to this site exclusively. I was recently granted this right on Wikipedia and I found it quite useful to move a lot of my early uploads that had bad titles. When I was going through my uploads, I realized a lot of them were uploaded here with the same bad titles. I would like to have this right so I could correct these issues without virtually spamming the categories here with requests that I feel I could do on my own. Thank you. Request for file mover rights. Much of my work on Commons and en:wiki is to do with images. I have uploaded hundreds of images to Commmons and have close to 2,000 edits, primarily in the image filespace. Without actually requesting it, recently I was granted Autopatrol rights as a "trustworthy and experienced" contributor. I have also had around 17,000 edits on en:wiki, with a lot of image work, I have had a long time association with en:WP:FP, and have just been granted File mover rights on English Wikipedia. I am therefore very conversant with image policy. I honestly don't expect I'd be using File mover rights a lot, but I think it's worth having if I need it, as occasionally I come across files that are in obvious need of a rename, and every now and then upload with an error in the filename, which could do with an immediate fix. I requested a rename a short time ago of File:Congo - Diocesi di Impfondo.png and noticed these requests take some time. I would like to help. I have studied the guidelines, am aware of what is expected and am able to put this into practice (File:958.JPG). Concerning trustworthiness, I'm crat on nl.wikipedia and an OTRS volunteer for commons, en.wikipedia and nl.wikipedia. Concerning my number of edits, I am aware I have only 200-300 edits on Commons. This is mainly because I like writing articles better then working on images, and have written 4000+ articles on nl.wikipedia. I am however awar of guidelines and am seriously interested in helping with requests to move images. I became active on commons mostly because I wanted to answer OTRS requests and most of my admin activity on nl.wikipedia is in answering requests. Answering requests takes knowledge of guidelines and a short effort. This means I can still write my articles while watching the request categories. Thank you. You may be right - I would have certainly asked the uploader first, as I have already been in touch to help identify these cars. Mr.choppers (talk) 17:20, 21 July 2011 (UTC)
Well, here are two I encountered today: File:MaseratiBiturbo.jpg is actually a Maserati Karif. I relocated it, but it still needs renaming. Also, File:A112 5.JPG is named so because the uploader thought it was of the fifth series when it is actually a first series. Renaming is obviously less pressing there, but would be useful nonetheless. If you don't think I should get filemover rights, perhaps you could fix these two. I have been on de and commons since 2006. In some cases my own files wer nemad wrong, in other cases I noticed wrong names in other users' files, e.g. a file containing a mountain is named as a nearby mountain.
At the moment I work at WLM where I will have to work on hundreds of files coming soon by Steschke and Ralf Roletschek whose navigator I was. As a filemover it would be easy for me to correct wrongly written names as this one ("Schloss") as well as wrongly describing names as this one. I have been experienced in renaming on de for years. I unintentionally made a mess at Category:CLEF 2011 while using a bot. It is a lot easier to name an image once you have it on commons with all the processed meta data at my disposal. I will be making more bot uploads from flickr and other sources in the upcoming days for Earth observation and Microbiology related images and do not want to inconvenience people with the task of renaming images. Also I am planning on helping with Commons:Flickr batch uploading so this tool would be most useful. Hi everybody !
Since I contribute on Commons or other Wikis, I allways did a conscientious Wikignome work. On commons, I sorted many files, uploaded some improved ones and some of my own work.
I've no problem to contribute with English language, a bit more with German and my French is nearly perfect.
I think no one will say I'm ill-minded but at the opposite rather serious. So if you want me to help renaming files, I'll be your man. I read the Renaming guideline, agree with them and shall apply them in my work-to-be.

Chase me ladies, I'm the Cavalry[edit]

I am hoping that Commons will trust me with the FileMover right. I am currently working through Category:Narrowboats and subcategories, and using my knowledge in that area to recategorise images accordingly (for example, recognising a particular class of narrowboat). Some files, such as File:DSCF1010bosleylock4.JPG need to be renamed to make the title understandable. Some files, such as File:Hard to port - - 640552.jpg or, need to be renamed to a clearer title. In addition, I have stumbled across a few images where a 'butty' is misidentified as a 'motor', or where the Steam narrowboat President is mislabelled as a 'diesel boat'. For those who might not know, I hold CU, OS and admin rights on en-wp, and I work for the UK chapter - although I realise that none of this 'entitles' me to Commons rights, I hope it shows that I am someone that can be trusted. There is, unfortunately, no indication that those other accounts: Template:User and Template:User belonged to you besides the redirects — please log in with both of the accounts and write on those userpages that your current account is Template:User and then I could consider that you've made about 120 edits from those three account combined. Which would definitely not be sufficient enough; please remember that Wikimedia Commons is a totally different project than the English Wikipedia and while we do appreciate your contributions there, this might not (and should not) be the only reason to grant any right here on Commons. odder (talk) 11:00, 28 November 2011 (UTC)

To facilitate the usage of pictures in Wikipedia articles, I requested many renamings of files with names like DSC00428.JPG (link). Fred the Oyster[edit]

I'd like to request file move/rename rights as I frequently create military shoulder sleeve insignias and distinctive unit insignia and in doing so I come across images to convert to svg that have non-standard naming structures and/or erroneous or non-obvious names. Currently there are very few users actively trying to make (and keep up) standard naming practices for SSI and DUIs so there's a rather large backlog. It would help considerably if I had this right. At the moment I don't really make full use of the rename tag because I find it cumbersome to remember which files I've tagged and which files have been renamed and which ones haven't. On the odd occasion I have used the tag it's always been actioned, and as far as I recall my request has never been turned down. I have to admit though it's not a right I'll be making frequent use of, but just enough that it's more expedient than using tags for someone else to do. Thank you. I've encountered several situations over the last few years where this would be a very useful thing to be able to do (the most recent example being [5], and I know enough to avoid using the function where it might cause problems - and also to be able to fix things should the worst happen. Thank you. Mike Peel (talk) 01:13, 5 December 2011 (UTC)

Morning Sunshine[edit]

Hello. I want to help out with renaming images. Although I only have nearly 1200 edits with this account, I had been a filemover before with 7500 edits in my previous account, User:Blue Marble. You can check out Thank you. Morning Sunshine (talk) 16:41, 7 December 2011 (UTC)

Surya Prakash.S.A.[edit]

Hi, I need the file mover rights as we in Tamil Wiki community is now conducting a Media contest. By the contest, nearly 3500 files are uploaded so far. As many people new to Wiki are not caring the file name guidelines. So, there are many files wrongly named. It's a big challenge for a user to search a correct file. Since the contest has started, I have requested many file renamings. You people are doing good. But, it took time and before that many files are used in articles too. So, we got requests from users on missing their files. (As they are new) So, the contest needs a file mover. According to my community's suggestion I am requesting the rights. I am an OTRS member and sysop in Tamil Wikipedia. Please set me the file mover rights. (No problem if the rights given for a limited time, as the Contest runs until February 29, 2012 only) Thank you very much. SuryaPrakash Talk... 14:03, 9 December 2011 (UTC)
As the lead organiser for the contest, i endorse/support Surya's request. He is an admin in Ta Wiki and a trusted community member. We have been bugging file movers with many move requests in the past few weeks. If one of us had file mover rights, we can take care of the renamings ourselves. Surya has volunteered to undertake the renaming tasks. Please grant him the rights. They will be used only for uncontroversial file moves.--Sodabottle (talk) 17:50, 9 December 2011 (UTC)
  1. Check the copyright status. Do not move files with questionable copyright status or from questionable sources.
  2. Follow COM:RENAME. Double check the new name before committing.
  3. If the file was in use, use move & replace.
  4. Template:Done and thanks for helping. -- RE rillke questions? 22:02, 9 December 2011 (UTC)
Thank you very much Rillke for giving me the right to move file :) Thank you Sodabottle for supporting my request. --SuryaPrakash Talk... 08:42, 10 December 2011 (UTC)

Keith Edkins[edit]

I would like to be able to rename my own files in two cases. Firstly, tropical cyclone tracks sometimes have to be renamed when the cyclone strengthens from a numbered depression to a named storm, as File:ARB02 2011 track.png to File:Keila 2011 track.png. Secondly book images accidentally given the wrong page number, as File:Yule Logs Page 258.jpg to File:Yule Logs Page 242.jpg. Thank you. Keith Edkins (talk) 09:19, 10 December 2011 (UTC)

I would like to have file renaming rights as the bulk of my contributions revolve around working with images, especially on en wiki where I already have file mover rights. My work often brings me to files here on commons where having such rights would be very helpful as I participate in the Graphics lab and regularly upload files. Alpha Quadrant[edit]

I would like to request the file mover flag. I am a file mover on enwiki and I am currently going through this list of files requiring a rename. As I am going through the list, I have noticed that there are quite a few files on commons with the same generic camera defined name. I am tagging these images for rename as I find them (example). However, it would be more efficient if I were able to perform these moves myself. Thank you. Alpha_Quadrant (talk) 03:04, 18 December 2011 (UTC)

I would like to have the filemover right. Quite often I stumble over meaningless filenames (IMG_* and the like) and it would be nice to be able to move them without bothering other users, at least when I know the subject, able to understand the language or read the alphabet. (When in doubt I either leave as is or put a rename suggestion for more experienced user to consider.) I have read Commons:File renaming and (judging from my rename requests so far) I believe I understand the "rules". Thank you. MagnusA (talk) 12:04, 20 December 2011 (UTC)

I would like the file mover right, to be able to fix misnamed files or files with meaningless names myself, rather than having to use rename templates and wait for someone else to do it. I have the same right over at en.wikipedia and have used it frequently to fix bad filenames or harmonize filenames of a set. Thank you. IllaZilla (talk) 21:01, 21 December 2011 (UTC)
Template:Notdone. Not enough experience on Commons yet. Please use Template:Tl and re-apply later. Trijnstel (talk) 21:46, 22 December 2011 (UTC)
Excuse me? I have had an account on Commons for for almost 5 years and have uploaded over 500 images. On the English Wikipedia I have moved hundreds of files that were misnamed, meaninglessly-named, or needed to be harmonized with like files. The claim that I don't have enough experience is, frankly, ludicrous. --IllaZilla (talk) 04:43, 23 December 2011 (UTC)
Template:Done and see my response here. One advice, please assume good faith in the future. Trijnstel (talk) 12:10, 23 December 2011 (UTC)

I try to keep Category:Iran and its subcategories as small and neat as possible. Sometimes I encounter some files that have completely meaningless names. I used to place the Template:Tl template on the image description page but now I think that I'm familiar enough with renaming guidelines and can do it myself. I'm also a license reviewer and contributed about 3,000 edits to commons. I would like to help the community through fulfilling rename requests too. Thank you.
