There was some taxonomic debate over the correct specific name for the plains zebra (Wikipedia: Plains Zebra). The quagga, E. quagga quagga, and the true Burchell's zebra, E. burchelli burchellii, are now considered to have been the same taxon, the correct name for the plains zebra should be E. quagga and not E. burchellii. The subspecies of the plain zebra Equus quagga are revised in 2004: six subspecies are recognisable:
- Quagga, Equus quagga quagga Boddaert, 1785 †
- Burchell's Zebra, Equus quagga burchellii Gray, 1824
- Grant's Zebra, Equus quagga boehmi Matschie, 1892
- Selous' zebra, Equus quagga borensis Lönnberg, 1921
- Chapman's Zebra, Equus quagga chapmani Layard, 1865
- Crawshay's Zebra, Equus quagga crawshayi De Winton, 1896
