Summary[edit]

Description

Every detail of this car is perfect - better than showroom condition. British Leyland showed an appalling lack of taste when they decided to brand the sporty model the 'SS', and I vaguely remember reading a story about it in the Daily Mirror. I believe it was given a less controversial name (1750 Sport?) soon after launch.

ROK 981M

This Allegro has quite an interesting history, origonally it was white and built as a pre-production car in 1972. At first it was used as a Longbridge factory runaround.. then quite oddly it was registered in 1974 hence the M reg and it was then owned by a Car Transporter Haulage company (presumably the contractors to British Leyland) This would make sense as they probibly used it on site then needed it to go on public roads later.. It was then sold at Auction in 1979 and found its way via a car dealer to a chap in Liverpool who drove it for the next 20 ordinary years(replacing its engine at one point) before sticking it in the local paper for sale. A relative of an Allegro Club Committee Member saw it for sale and told him about it. One thing lead to another and eventually the Club Chairman ended up buying it, at the time blisfully unaware of it's significant age(only buying it as a donor for his other SS model)But after studying its VIN no. it became the car restore!

Its now finished in beautiful Lagoon Blue Metallic(only used in the first year)and Ochure Tan trim. After spending 10 years in restoration it appeared at the Austin Centenary in 2006, and drew quite a few admirers. It really is a credit to its owner.
