Summary[edit]

Description
English: A shrine to the Virgin Mary created at a tree on Bergeneline Avenue between 60th Street and 61st Street in West New York, New Jersey, as seen on August 24, 2012. The tree drew the attention of residents and the national media[1][2][3] in July 2012, due to a knot on its trunk (barely visible beneath the crucifix nailed to the tree's trunk, though more easily visible in other photos in this category) that many Christians believed to be an image of the Virgin Mary, with some believing it to be Our Lady of Guadalupe, the Virgin Mary as honored in Mexico. The image was first noticed by Eva Copan-Titla after a man from Mexico was killed in the area in a vehicular accident, according to residents.[4] Newark Archdiocese spokesman Jim Goodness, however, stated that the image is likely "some discoloration that resembles Our Lady of Guadalupe."[5]
