Français : détail de la surface d'une accumulation d'une couche épaisse 5O cm environ ici) de mousse, en aval de l'écluse du Grand carré, en sortie de Lille, vers Saint André (Nord de la France). Cette mousse est un indice de pollution organique et éventuellement de présence de savon ou produit similaire (amonium quaternaire..). le phénomène se produit souvent après de fortes pluies qui ont lessivé de vastes surfaces imperméabilisées. Il est parfois accompagné d'une légère mortalité de poissons. Dans les années 1960, il était beaucoup plus fréquent, et les couches de mousses pouvaient dépasser 1 voire 2 m d'épaisseur. A cette époque, il n'y avait pas de station d'épuration dans cette zone.
