Summary[edit]

Description

A float-equipped and torpedo-armed Aérospatiale Alouette II helicopter lands on the U.S. Navy radar-picket destroyer USS Everett F. Larson (DDR-830), in the Pacific in 1959. The crew of the destroyer tender USS Bryce Canyon (AD-36) spent 400 man-hours to clean the 8.5 x 12.2 m fantail of the destroyer of all obstacles. Interestingly, a radar-picket destroyer was chosen for the anti-submarine trials, and not a anti-submarine destroyer. The French Alouette II was probalby chosen because it was turbine-powered and able to carry two anti-submarine torpedoes.

Helicopters would only be deployed on U.S. destroyers and frigates until the 1970s. The 1960s FRAM-program introduced the QH-50 DASH drone.
