Description

The following is the author's description of the photograph quoted directly from the photograph's Flickr page.

" Barrio marinero de San Cristobal.Las Palmas de Gran Canaria.

Nada más entrar a las palmas de Gran Canaria por la carretera queviene del Sur, nos encontramos con el único Barrio Marinero de LasPalmas Capital. El Barrio de San Cristobal unico puerto pesquero enimportancia de la Capital.
A este pequeño barrio no solo se le conoce por la pesca sino tambienes conocido por su castillo llamado Castillo de San Pedro Martir ahoraCastillo de San Cristobal.
La Historia de este castillo se remonta alla por el año 1577 cuandofué construido por el Capitán D. Diego de Melgarejo y posteriormentereconstruido en 1638, participo en la defensa de la Ciudad de lasPalmas entre los años 1595 y 1599, hasta el 1878 tuvo un uso militarhasta que en esa fecha tuvo la ordén de desartillarlo(quitar todo elarmamento).
Se trata de una torre redonda que fueconstruida dentro del agua.
En el 1999 fue restaurada y hoy en día se encuentra en buen estado.
El 22 de Abril d 1949 Fue declarado Monumento Historico Artístico.
El Barrio Marinero de San Cristobal es conocido tambien por su pesca,por su paseo maritimo junto a la playa de este pago marinero, por suscasas de Pescadores, por sus gentes y porque no por sus importantesrestaurantes donde se ofrece ese pescado fresco del día. "
