English: Arch, Dunstall Castle. View from below the eastern arch of Dunstall Castle, a folly or 'eyecatcher' built for the 6th Earl of Coventry in 1766. It was designed by Robert Adam and in a letter dated 17th September 1765 to the Earl he refers to 'Drawing of the ruin for a visto from the house. I think it might be built to have a good effect at a Distance at no great expence, as there does nor require much delicacy in the workmanship.'(sic) (Source: The Coventrys of Croome, Catherine Gordon ISBN 1 86077 139 4) Adam was paid £5 for the drawing. |
