Notes
  • Significance: Building 776, built in 1943, is considered significant for its association with U.S. Naval history and the Mare Island Naval Shipyard (MINSY), the first naval installation on the west coast. Portions of MINSY comprise a National Historic Landmark. Building 776, however, is outside the landmark and within the Mare Island Historic District. Building 776 was constructed as a storage building for the fire station located within the Naval Ammunition Depot. It is a contributing element of successful base operations at Mare Island and is an increasingly rare example of a temporary wood-framed building constructed on the island during WWII.
  • Survey number: HABS CA-1543-CU
  • Building/structure dates: 1942 Initial Construction
