Summary[edit]
DescriptionBetlehemezes Hajdudorog 2.JPG |
English: The picture depicts a scene of a typical Hungarian Christmas tradition, called Betlehemezés that means something like Bethlehem play. The handmade church on the picture is called betlehem.
The Bethlehem plays are usually performed by a group of young people or by children who are at least ten years old during the Christmas' days. The Bethlehem-group usually consists of three shepherds, three kings, an angel, the Virgin Mother and St. Joseph. The betlehem is built by the group. It has to have a wooden frame covered by cardboard, decorated with colourful ribbons and "inpopulated" with Christmas related characters made of china or ceramics. The group visits usually relatives, neighbours, friends or sometimes anybody to perform their Bethlehem play that tells the story of Jesus' birth with some Christmas carols. In the end of the performance they ask blessings for the house and wish merry Christmas. In return they might get some food and money. This picture was taken in a family house in Hajdúdorog, Hungary. Since this town has a number of Greek Catholic inhabitants the betlehem built in this town usually follows the shape of the most important Greek Catholic pilgrimage-site: the basilica of Máriapócs.
Mivel a város túlnyomó részben görög katolikus vallású, ezért a betlehemeket nagyrészt a legfőbb görög katolikus zarándokhely, a Máriapócsi bazilika mintájára építik meg. |
