Object history Acquired for display in the House Chamber after a lengthy campaign by the artist, this historical landscape shows Henry Hudson landing his vessel, Half-Moon, in the Hudson River Valley. The explorer is met by a group of Native Americans, and a rainbow—symbolizing a promising beginning for this venture—spans the sky overhead, between Storm King and Crow’s Nest mountains. This painting, and its companion piece Entrande Into Monterey commemorated exploration on the East and West Coasts. They were displayed in the House Chamber until 1901, when they were moved to the Member’s private staircases beside the Speaker’s Lobby.
