Ein Neubau, der die Silhouette der Hauptstadt verändert und den Auftakt für die moderne Gestaltung des neuen Alexanderplatzes bildet, wurde am 9.9.1964 im Herzen Berlins eingeweiht: das Haus des Lehrers. In der neben dem Hochhaus gelegenen Kongresshalle versammelten sich Bauarbeiter, Ingenieure und Architekten, denen Walter Ulbricht am Vortage in einem Schreiben zur Erfüllung ihrer zum 15. Jahrestag der Gründung der DDR übernommenen Verpflichtung gratuliert hatte, Berliner Pädagogen und Persönlichkeiten des gesellschaftlichen Lebens der DDR und ihrer Hauptstadt. Der Erste Stellvertreter des Vorsitzenden des Ministerrates der DDR, Willi Stoph, hielt die Festansprache und übergab den repräsentativen Bau dem Oberbürgermeister der Hauptstadt, Friedrich Ebert.
