Nederlands: Uit geheel Kameroen reisden regionale vertegenwoordigers en hoogwaardigheidsbekleders af naar Yaoundé voor hun aanhankelijkheidsbetuiging aan de op 23 maart 1965 herkozen president Ahidjo. Yaoundé is zowel de landelijke als de politieke hoofdstad van Kameroen.
Ahmadou Babatoura Ahidjo (24-8-1924 - 30-11-1989) was van 1960 tot 6 november 1982 president van Kameroen. Hij was de zoon van een Fulani dorpshoofd en moslim. Tijdens deTweede Wereldoorlog diende hij in het Franse leger en werd in 1957 vice premier en een jaar later premier van Frans Kameroen. Na de onafhankelijkheid werd Ahidjo gekozen tot eerste president van de Republiek Kameroen. In 1961 wist hij zijn gebied te verenigen met een deel van Brits Kameroen tot de Federale Republiek Kameroen. Ahidjo werd vier maal herkozen tijdens verkiezingen in 1965, 1970, 1975 en 1980. In 1982 trad hij af en werd opgevolgd door Paul Biya. Na een conflict met Biya werd hij bij verstek ter dood veroordeeld, later omgezet in levenslang. Ahidjo verbleef vervolgens afwisselend in Frankrijk en Senegal waar hij in 1989 te Dakar overleed. |
