| Description |
Nederlands: Doek. Edelmannen in Oost Sumba dragen twee identieke hinggi doeken. Eén om de schouders, de ander rond de heupen. Het weven en dragen van deze kleurrijke doeken (voornamelijk rood, blauw en bruin) was oorspronkelijk het alleenrecht van de adel.
De doeken vertonen een grote verscheidenheid aan motieven waaronder mensen, schedelbomen, dieren zoals paarden, vogels en zeedieren. De doeken vervullen verschillende functies in de maatschappij van Sumba. Als erfstukken van de familie, spelen ze een belangrijke rol in de rituele uitwisseling van geschenken en allerbelangrijkst bij begravenisriten. Overleden leiders worden in een groot aantal (tot 200 aan toe) Hinggidoeken gelegd om de passage van de ziel naar wereld van de voorouders te vergemakkelijken..
