Nederlands: Agogo is een term die bij verschillende Nigeriaanse bevolkingsgroepen (de Yoruba-, Igala- en Edo sprekende groepen) wordt gebruikt voor een geslagen klepelloze klok.
Deze dubbele klok zonder klepel wordt in de hand gehouden met de open kant naar boven, en extern aangeslagen met een (ijzeren) stok (deze ontbreekt hier). De klokken zijn aan elkaar verbonden door middel van een beugel/handvat die met rotanrepen omwoeld is. Het instrument wordt gebruikt om - in een ensemble met verschillende trommen samen- ritme aan te geven bij dansen en ceremonies van uiteenlopende aard. Het wordt ook als signaalinstrument gebruikt. Daarnaast is het een attribuut van hoogwaardigheidsbekleders, zoals bij de Sultan van Foumban. De Igala maken onderscheid tussen een agogo en de grotere ceremoniële enu. De agogo wordt door heb gebruikt ter begeleiding van zang en dans. De enu daarentegen, waarvan verschillende afmetingen in serie samen worden bespeeld, wordt louter ceremonieel gebruikt. De verschillende klokken hebben verschillende benamingen en rangen en worden bewaard in voorouder heiligdommen. De agogo werd door Afrikaanse slaven meegenomen naar Noord- en Zuid Amerika. In Brazilië wordt de agogo gebruikt in Afro-Braziliaanse religieuze rituelen van de Candomblé. In Cuba wordt de agogo bespeeld in rituelen van de Lucumi cultus. Het instrument heeft daar de vorm aangenomen van een schoffel waartegen bijvoorbeeld met een grote spijker wordt geslagen. |
