English: A heap of rattan in a storehouse in Enggano, South-Sumatra.
Nederlands: Negatief. De meeste rotan die in de koloniale tijd werd gebruikt kwam uit het bos, maar het werd in toenemende mate aangeplant. Het zijn klimmende palmen behorend tot verschillende geslachten waarvan Calamus de bekendste is. Net als bamboe is het al vroeg in het commerciële circuit terecht gekomen. In de 17e eeuw komt het al voor in de handelsstatistieken van de VOC. In Europa was het vooral bekend vanwege de rotanmeubels. Ook werd het (net als bamboe) veel voor matten en ander vlechtwerk gebruikt en werden er van de dikkere soorten stokken gemaakt. Op Sumatra was Palembang de grootste exporthaven van rotan. Enggano, een eilandengroep ten westen van Sumatra, was ook in 1940 nog zeer zwaar bebost. (P. Boomgaard, 2001).
