Nederlands: Foto. Als na ongeveer 1870 steeds meer cultuurmaatschappijen op talloze plaatsen op Sumatra hun geluk gaan beproeven, leven de mensen die een nieuwe onderneming moeten beginnen aanvankelijk in tamelijk primitieve omstandigheden. Van de luxe die later min of meer vanzelfsprekend is voor Westerse employees van dergelijke ondernemingen is dan nog geen sprake. Deze foto geeft aardig de fase van het 'Wilde Westen' van de Sumatraanse plantages weer. Aanvankelijk is het ook nog niet zo duidelijk waar de beste omstandigheden voor plantages te vinden zijn. De Residentie Lampong bleek om verschillende redenen geen geschikte regio. (P. Boomgaard, 2001).
