Nederlands: Het dier op deze staf, een leeuw, is het symbool van koning Glele, die Dahomey, het oude Benin-rijk, bestuurde tussen 1858 en 1889. Glele zette de succesvolle oorlogscampagnes van zijn vader, Ghezo, voort. Deels om deze zijn dood te wreken, deels om slaven te vangen. Hij sloot verdragen met de Fransen, maar verzette zich tegen de Engelsen, die de afschaffing van de slavernij wel serieus namen. Hoewel Frankrijk de slavernij al aan het eind van de 18e eeuw had afgeschaft, stond het de handel elders nog steeds toe. De Britten daarentegen verboden in 1833 slavernij niet alleen in Groot Brittanië, maar ook in haar overzeese bezittingen. De marine vocht heftig met de West-Afrikaanse slavenhandelaren.
Glele echter, bleef slaven gebruiken voor arbeid en als offers voor voorouders. Aan het einde van zijn regeerperiodewaren dde relaties met Frankrijk niet zo best meer. Zijn zoon, Behanzin, was de laatste koning van het rijk. Tijdens diens bewind veroverden de Fransen Dahomey. In 1892 namen ze de hoofdstad Abomey in. Behanzin werd verbannen. Dahomey ging in 1904 op in het koloniale Frans West-Afrika. Maar de koninklijke families bleven bestaan en de koninklijke symbolen bleven in gebruik. Dahomey werd onafhankelijk in 1960 en in 1975 veranderde het land zijn naam in Benin. |
