English: Calcite
Locality: Rucks Pit, Fort Drum, Okeechobee County, Florida, USA (Locality at mindat.org)
Size: 16.5 x 16.0 x 10.7 cm.
This fascinating large cabinet specimen was formed when gemmy calcite crystals grew in the natural pockets formed by buried fossil clamshells. The interior of the two shells now contain fine, gemmy, golden crystals. The large, nearly completely exposed mollusk is 10.0 cm. Very few of these specimens are on matrix, fewer still have the size and double-barreled bonus of two shells encased in matrix. This is Pleistocene Epoch (1.8 MY - 10,000 years BP) Mercenaria species.
