| Kirjeldus | Chairwoman Rose Peter of the Upendo Women Growers Association in Mlandize, Kibaha, Tanzania, shows off the first batch of sweet peppers the women have grown in their new greenhouse. The 22 women in the group have been growing vegetables for local consumption since 2005, but were making very little profit until they began receiving support training and technical assistance through USAID Tanzania’s Feed the Future Initiative. USAID partnered with a local bank that provided this association, and others like it, with a greenhouse and as a result, incomes for the women are rising. After only three months of growing in the greenhouse with USAID assistance, each Upendo woman has more than tripled her income by making $35 per month from sweet peppers in addition to what they were earning from their adjacent small plots. As these women are ready to reinvest some of their profits, USAID will leverage Feed the Future support to make sure they have the skills and knowledge they need to continue raising their families out of poverty, and will keep looking for innovative public private partnerships to maximize the long term impact of development assistance from the American people.
