Description
English: Chester's City Walls - Bridgegate to Eastgate #8
  • These are the Wishing Steps, which were erected in 1785 when the walls were made into a walkway around the city.
  • The footpath on the left, which goes round to the junction of Park Street and Duke Street, makes it possible for wheelchair users to bypass these steps. There is a ramp in Park Street, which provides access to the next section of the walls.
  • Part way up the steps on the right is an inscription recording the year of construction - see 374133 . Legend has it that if you run up the steps, back down, and then up again without drawing breath your wish will be granted. You may also hurt yourself, so the usual health and safety warnings apply to this unproven claim.
