Description
English: Chirk Aqueduct, near to Chirk Bank, Shropshire, Great Britain. This fine stone aqueduct carries the Llangollen Canal over the Afon (River) Ceiriog. The water is contained in an iron trough set into the stone. Its ten arches extend for 710' (220 m) and are up to 70' high. The river is the border between England and Wales at this point and the little black sign just discernable in front of the nearest arch says "Welcome to England" on its opposite face. The arches seen on the left are those of the railway viaduct that runs alongside the aqueduct. In the distance the portal of Chirk Tunnel can be seen behind the narrowboat that is crossing the aqueduct. This fine structure would probably be far more famous than it is if it were not overshadowed by the nearby Pontcysyllte Aqueduct which is both taller and longer. Also whereas the Pontcysyllte is an iron trough with a sheer drop on one side, this aqueduct has broad stone sills on either side making for a far less dramatic crossing !
