USA (Base front:) IN MEMORY OF/THE MEN OF NEWFANE/WHO SERVED THEIR/COUNTRY/IN THE CIVIL WAR/1861-1866 (Lower base front:) "ON FAME'S ETERNAL CAMPING GROUND/THEIR SILENT TENTS/ARE SPREAD,/AND GLORY GUARDS,/WITH SOLEMN ROUND,/THE BIVOUAC OF/THE DEAD."(Base side:) NEWFANE/ROLL OF HONOR/WORLD WAR/1917-1918 (List of names of Newfane, VT soldiers killed in World War I) (Two other sides of base list names of Newfane, VT soldiers killed in the Civil War) Founder's mark appears. Description: A Civil War soldier holding a musket and standing on a pedestal. The soldier wears a cap and a three quarters length coat with cape. His proper right hand is below his proper left hand holding the barrel of his gun. His proper left foot is slightly forward. The relief on the front base depicts a battle scene with wounded figures, a broken cannon, trees and a setting sun. The base is surrounded by evergreen plantings H. 48 in. x D. 67 in."
