Description Cladonia mitis Sandst., 1918 (photograph of a herbarium specimen taken through a dissecting microscope (x40) showing an open axil) Growing on soil in open area of woods in mats with Cladonia rangiferina & C. arbuscula, 2.2 miles W from the U. M. Biological Station, Cheboygan County, Michigan, USA; collected and identified by Richard E. Riefner (No. 81-225, 23 Jun 1981); specimen is now in the Lichen Herbarium of the New York Botanical Garden.
