Description
English: This diagram was used in a section called "Artificial Hermeneutics, or Reverse Engineering", in chapter 8 ("Biology is Engineering") of Daniel Dennett's book Darwin's Dangerous Idea (1995), with the following caption: "Early rotating cranes and other devices for raising or moving loads. (From Diderot and d'Alembert, Encyclopédie [1751-72], reproduced in Fitchen 1986.)" The citation is Fitchen, John. 1986. Building Construction Before Mechanization. Cambridge, Mass.: MIT Press. (326 pp.)
