[edit] Summary

Description
English: Creation of a type Ia supernova.

1: Close binary star system. Star B has a heigher mass than star A.

2: Star B evolves into a red giant.

3: The red giant (B) expands beyond its Roche lobe and mass starts to transfer to A.

4: B losses mass and A gains mass.

5: B degenerates into a white dwarf.

6: Star A evolves into a red giant. Mass transfers to B.

7: While A losses mass, B gains mass and approaches the Chandrasekhar limit.

8: Star B explodes in a type Ia supernova.

9: Star A is left and it also, in time, degenrates into a white dwarf.

4: B taber masse og A vinder masse.
