English: Derelict Land This photograph is of derelict land that was once part of the Morton Colliery (founded by the Clay Cross Company).
In the foreground is the, still functioning, Morton Colliery electricity substation. Looking across the roof of the substation and to the right of the pool is the site of one of the mines 373960s (surrounded by railings). This particular shaft remained in use after the closure of the mine because it was used to pump water out of the workings and into 373843s at the top of a 373664. This was necessary to prevent other working pits in the area from flooding. |
