Notes
  • Significance: The Railway Terminal Post Office and Express building (American Railway Express Building) is listed in the National Register of Historic Places as part of the nearby Southern Pacific Railroad Depot property. The property appears to have been listed under Criterion A due to its importance as a major transportation center in the west, but possesses architectural distinction under Criterion C as well. The Railway Express Building is one of two structures in the listed complex. It is a strong representative example of Mediterranean Revival design of the revivalist era, with a skillful compositional balance between its rich, warm, brick walls and airy, two-story tall, window expanses. Fine, ivory toned, terra cotta ornamentation graces its parapet and cornice. The building reflects the design of the adjacent Railroad Depot, designed in 1925 by master architects, Bliss and Faville of San Francisco, California. The buildings are the most notable example of the style utilized in a railroad context in the region, and have provided an impressive entry point for rail arrival in Sacramento since their opening in 1926. As the first transcontinental railroad, the Central Pacific-Southern Pacific Railroad played a key role in the development of California. (While the nomination briefly alludes to its significance under transportation and settlement themes, this document undertakes a more detailed history of the railroad and its role in California's evolution as an aspect of its context.)
