| Description |
English: Dock crane, Belfast [5] A closer look at one of the cranes used to unload ships that dock in Belfast. As many of the vessels carry, for example, loose aggregates, grain or animal feeds in their holds, the cranes are used to scoop the cargo out. It is then moved towards the grey hopper shaft on the left of the crane, underneath which sits an articulated lorry with a dry-bulk trailer. The cargo is then released from the crane, dropping through the hopper into the trailer. Once the trailer is full the lorry speeds off to its destination and the next one drives under the hopper. The whole process is then repeated, taking up to a week to fully unload some of the larger vessels. See also 783526 |
