Summary[edit]

Description
English: Looking at the bottom of the folds in the figure's toga on the southwest side of figure of the statue "Valor", one of two statues that make up the work The Arts of War. The Arts of War are statues which adorn either side of the northeastern end of Arlington Memorial Bridge in Washington, D.C., in the United States. They were designed by sculptor Leo Friedlander, and erected in 1951.

The statue and plinth are of bronze, cast at the Fonderia Artistica foundry in Milan, Italy. The quality of the work was poor, leaving numerous pits (some as deep as 4 mm) and even holes in the surface. The pedestal is open to the earth below, which permits excessive condensation to occur on the interior, where it pools in crevices and folds. The statue was also fire-gilded in gold, but the pitting meant that the gild did not adhere well. By 1970, much of the gilding had come off, and extensive corrosion of the statue had occurred. Brush electroplating was used to restore the gilding.

This view shows where a hole has corroded in the bottom of a fold, and water is dripping out of the interior. Much of the gilding has also come off, and what remains has corroded -- causing "blossoming" and gathering into corners and crevices.
