Description
Español: Ejemplar del diario El Mercurio de Santiago, año 1906.
English: Front page of the August 17, 1906, edition of El Mercurio. Headlines read: "Last Night's Earthquake. At 7:50 p.m. there was produced an earthquake which lasted three or four minutes. Immense and indescribable panic in the city. Heartrending scenes and acts of madness. Deaths and Wounded in Various Neighborhoods. Collapses and cracking of buildings. Their inhabitants spend the night by candlelight. Public squares and streets serve as relief sites. Telegraph and phone cables downed. No News From Valparaíso and the Southern Provinces Until 5:00 a.m. The Andes in Danger. Aftershocks repeat with frequency, but with less strength. Various information."
