Summary[edit]

Description Of all the extant crosses this is the most heavily preserved and the only one in an urban setting. However the restoration is superb and gives one a real feeling of how the originals must have looked. I have seen all three existingn crosses and this is my favourite. Note the brilliant 1903 HSBC bank building behind. The Eleanor crosses were twelve originally wooden but later lavishly decorated stone, monuments of which three survive intact in a line down part of the east of England. King Edward I had the crosses erected between 1291 and 1294 in memory of his wife Eleanor of Castille, marking the nightly resting-places along the route taken when her body was transported to London
