Dans le cas des empilements compacts (p. ex. héxagonal compact, hc, ou cubique à faces centrées, cfc), les atomes d'un plan ont un arrangement héxagonal: on peut mettre six spheres en contact, car trois sphères en contact forment un triangle équilatéral (d'angle 60°).


In the case of close packed arrangements (e.g. hexagonal close-packed, hcp, or face-centered cubic, fcc), the atoms on a plane have an hexagonal arrangement(staggered rows): you can put six spheres touching one sphere, because three spheres in contact form an equilateral tirangle (60° angle).
