Summary[edit]

Description

I didn't see many cats while I was in Ethiopia (compared, say, to inner southeast Portland, Oregon).

But I met this cat while walking through the narrow streets of the ancient walled city of Harar in eastern Ethiopia. Harar is the fourth holiest city in Islam. The markets are colorful and exotic. The streets wind here and there through high whitewashed walls and past ancient wooden doors that provide glimpses of shady courtyards painted vivid shades of blue, green, pink or red.

Harar was closed to outsiders until the late 19th Century, when it was brought into the Ethiopian empire. (Of course, the famous explorer Richard Burton managed to enter the city in the 1850's, but that's another story.)

On first impression, this cat seemed to be aloof. Well, with Harar's grand past and elevated status, who wouldn't be, especially a feline?

Actually, she was just in a kitty trance. All I had to do was sweet talk her, and she happily jumped down from her perch, stretched, and came over for some attention. I was happy to pet her until it was time for me to move on.
