Summary[edit]

Description
English: Exterior view of the Wilcox Building on the southeast corner of Spring Street and 2nd Street, ca.1905
  • The building stands five-stories tall (plus basement). The roof has a concrete balustrade and a flagpole. There are two narrow balconies visible, one on the corner (center), and one on the right side of the building above the large arched Spring Street entrance.
  • The streets are bustling with pedestrian and vehicular traffic. Horse drawn carriages and streetcars can be seen on the streets. The bell tower of Saint Vibiana's Cathedral can be seen at left.
  • Legible signs include: "the El[...], Sig[...], rooms", "J.F. McEl[...], printer[s]", "First National Bank", "California railway", "Santa Fe", "Freight and Ticket Office", "200", "Vernon", "Equitable Life Assurance Society", "Fred A. Hines, A.P. Chipron, general agent, Douglas E. Poole, cashier", "Metropolitan Life Insurance Co., incorporated by the state of New York, district office", "W.I. Hollingsworth & Co.", "real estate loans", "John T. Griffith Company", "real estate insurance, rentals, loans", "Dr. Cowles, chief medical examiner", "Germa[n] Bu[ilding]", "Union [...]efining", "Douglas, Lacey & Co.", "law offices of R. Wilson", "Doctor Solomon, eyes, ears, nose, and throat", "808, H. Jevne Co."

  • The Wilcox Building was designed by the San Francisco firm of Pissis & Moore, with a Classical Revival facade of grey sandstone. Completed in 1896. The Bryson Block and Hollenbeck Hotel were "more flamboyant neighbors."
  • After extensive damage during the Sylmar Earthquake in 1971, its upper four stories were demolished, leaving only the basement and the unrecognizable stripped facade of the ground floor.
