| Description |
English: Located 70 feet above Lake Mendota on the westerly grounds of Mendota Mental Health Institute in Madison, Wisconsin, Farwell's Point Mound Group was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1974. This photo shows remnants of one of two panther effigy mounds. The group also contains one bird, three linears, and one undefined effigy, all built during the Late Woodland culture (ca. 650-1200). Several other effigy mounds in this group, including a bird and a bear, were destroyed during the construction of the hospital facilities. Farwell's Point Mound Group also contains eleven conicals constructed during the Middle Woodland culture (ca. 100-500), one of which rises to a height of ten feet. |
