Summary[edit]

Description

The beginnings of the fortress, go to the 10th JH returned. A medieval castle is first mentioned 915 as Swabian Duke residenz. In the following years, the castle was among other seat of the nobility family Zähringer (relatives of the Staufen family). In the 16th Century, the castle was again Duke's seat and expanded in future to the Württemberg State stronghold. The fortriss at this time was impregnable. 1800, the fort was handed over without a fight from the fortress commander to the French troops, who then immediately began to plunder the fortress and to grind later. The ruins of the fortressis is owned today by the country Baden-Wuerttemberg.

The curious name 'Twiel' comes probably from the Alemannic. ('tuo' = swell)
