Summary[edit]

Description

Paying my respects at the 9/11 Memorial, which was dedicated in September 2011 on the tenth anniversary of the tragic events.

The terrorist attacks began on board American Airlines Flight 11, heading from Boston to Los Angeles. It was hijacked shortly after takeoff. Flight attendant Betty Ong was the first person to let the world know of what was going on, by placing a phone call to an American Airlines reservation center. Her professional, calm demeanor in reporting the situation on board the flight proved very valuable to the rest of the world. Ong, and her colleague Amy Sweeney, continued to calmly make reports about the inflight situation to the ground, until the final moments.

Ong's calm, professional demeanor makes her a flight attendant role model to be remembered for eternity, as well as the first of many heroes of the tragic day.

At 8:46 AM, American 11, piloted by lead hijacker Mohammed Atta, crashed into One World Trade Center, killing everyone on board. It also trapped everyone above the 91st floor impact zone, including the workers and conference attendees at the Windows of the World Restaurant on the 107th Floor. Some of the most iconic images of that day were those of the people jumping from those smoky, burning upper floors, having been forced to choose from death by burning or death by falling. One World Trade Center burned until 10:28 AM when it finally collapsed.
