Summary[edit]
DescriptionFridolin (4983363000).jpg |
In the early 1960s Volkswagen were approached by the German Post Office and asked to produce a small purpose built van for light delivery duties. VW raided their parts bins and came up with strange looking vehicle with some parts borrowed from the Type-2 vans but with a front-end similar to the VW Type-3. In any case the Typ-147 Kleinlieferwagen or "Fridolin" was the result. They were used by the Swiss Post-Office too (and possibly Lufthansa?) - the Swiss vans had the curved rear-corner windows as seen on this example. I believe the normal equipment included only a single seat, 2 sliding doors (possibly the best part of the design?) and sometimes an Eberspacher petrol heater. They were powered by a standard 1200 Beetle engine. |
