| Description |
Magnetic field of Ganymede. Calculated using data from Gallileo's second encounter to the moon at September 6th 1996 (superposition model with 120nT homogenous field and equatorial field strength of 720nT for the moon's own dipole field). The co-rotating Ganymede-centered reference system is such that the x-axis points towards Jupiter, the z-axis is the common spin axes of Jupiter, Ganymede and its orbit. The y-axis is suppressed and shows in direction of Ganymede's orbital motion. The green line - the separatrix - seperates regions of magnetic field lines which a) go from moon to moon, b) from moon to planet or c) from planet to planet. |
