Summary[edit]

Friedrich August Ferdinand Schulenburg (1869–1959), Garde-Kürassier-Regiment der in Berlin stationierten 1. Garde-Kavalleriebrigade, während der World Columbian Exposition 1893 in Chicago, USA. Atelier Friesleben, State Street, Chicago.

Im Jahr 1893 nahmen zwanzig der besten deutschen Garde-Kavalleristen auf die Bitte Buffalo Bills hin an einer Reitschau im Rahmen der in Chicago stattfindenden Weltausstellung teil. Das Photo zeigt einen der Teilnehmer in der Uniform der Garde-Ulanen, die die deutschen Garde-Kavalleristen während ihres Aufenthaltes in den USA aus Gründen der Einheitlichkeit trugen. Ein Jahr später wurden die Reitervorführungen in New York wiederholt und der aus Holdenstedt bei Uelzen stammende Schulenburg war wieder dabei. Ein bis zum Tode Buffalo Bills im Jahr 1917 geführter Briefwechsel ist heute ebensowenig erhalten wie das beim Abschied in New York von Colonel Cody an alle deutschen Garde-Kavalleristen verschenkte Photo mit persönlicher Widmung, das Ferdinand Schulenburg bis zu seinem Tod im Jahr 1959 als Talisman bei sich trug.
