Notes
  • Significance: The cotton industry brought great prosperity to the town of Calvert in the late 1800's. At one time there were three gins in operation. The Gibson Gin and Oil Co. was founded by brothers J.H. and P.C. Gibson and became incorporated in 1899. By 1912 it claimed to be the world's largest ginning operation. The present depot-styled office building and weigh platform were constructed in 1918 by a local carpenter, W.H. Lange, on the site of a single story office and warehouse owned by the Maddox family until 1877. The canopy over the weigh platform was destroyed by a tornado in 1975.
