Description
English: Grand Canal stone This stone let into the lock wall at the river lock commemorates the opening of the section of the Grand Canal from Tullamore to the Shannon in 1803. Unfortunately even on the original photograph the wording cannot be entirely made out. As best as can be made out it states:

The EXTENSION of THE GRAND CANAL from Tullamore to the River Shannon being [……] of [?7] Irish Miles consisting of 10Locks 8 large Acqueducts 10 Small Acqueducts [or] tunnels and 20 bridges [was commenced] 1 January 1802 and opened [completely] to Navigation on 25 October 1808
