Summary[edit]
DescriptionGranite Tramway Junction - geograph.org.uk - 934432.jpg |
English: Granite Tramway Junction The right fork leads down to Holwell Quarry, which is just visible on the right, below Holwell Tor. The granite rails were flanged so that the iron wheels of the trucks ran on the outside. A pointsman used the hole visible at the point where the right-hand rail forks, to direct trucks down the branch line. Horses drew long lines of trucks up the hill and, hitched to the rear, acted as brakes to bring empty trucks back. Stone from local quarries was used to build the London Bridge that has since been transported to America and re-erected there.
An example of a stone truck can be seen at the N.T. Parke museum at Bovey Tracey. |
