Notes The sitter is turned three-quarters to the left, and wears a black cap, a dark fur-lined surcoat, and purple sleeves. The last line of the letter he is holding may contain the surname Primrose: Members of a family with this name seem to have been recorded in the early modern period in the town of Trunch in Norfolk.
